Beyond Flares

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin disease characterised by persistent inflammation, pruritus, discomfort, and fissured skin, substantially impacting the physical health, social interactions, and psychological well-being of affected individuals.
Recent years have witnessed escalating concerns regarding the adverse effects associated with the prolonged use of steroids and corticosteroids, coupled with the lack of targeted, efficient and safer alternatives for severe AD cases.
As a result, patients are increasingly searching for sustainable alternatives that benefit their skin, aiding them in effectively self-manage their symptoms.
In this project, textiles transcend their traditional role, offering enhanced benefits to the wearer. Infused with pigments extracted from microalgae, which are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, this garment is designed for close interaction with the skin. Its dual purpose is to alleviate inflammatory symptoms such as itching and to protect the skin from external bacteria.
